Water builds up behind the wall. Rain soaks the soil, the water has nowhere to go, and the pressure pushes the wall out. Once the wall leans or bulges, it comes down and gets rebuilt.
We build drainage in from the start. Weep holes, clean gravel, filter fabric, and a perforated pipe carry water out instead of letting it press on your wall.

The drainage detail stays the same with all three wall types.
Good
Interlocking segmental block, dry stacked on a compacted gravel base with a built-in setback. Split-face finish in grey, tan, or blended tones, with a matching block cap.
Better
Reinforced concrete block core on a rebar footer, faced with natural or manufactured stone veneer and finished with a natural or cast stone cap. A natural stone look at a mid-range price.
Best
Solid chopped stone laid full depth in mortar on a rebar footer, topped with a natural or cast stone cap. The premium option.

Under a mortared wall we pour a rebar-reinforced concrete footer below grade. Under segmental block we compact a gravel base.
We leave weep holes through the wall near the base so water has a way out through the face.
Clean gravel goes behind the full height of the wall so water drops down instead of pressing on the wall.
Filter fabric separates the soil from the gravel so clay does not stop the drainage.
A perforated pipe at the base carries water out to daylight and away from the wall.
Walls taller than 4 feet require stamped engineering drawings. We coordinate that with an engineer as part of the job, so you are not chasing it yourself. Permit and HOA rules change from address to address, and we will help you work through your local restrictions.
We come out, measure the slope, and look at where the water runs. The estimate and site visit are free.
You get a written quote with the wall type, the height, the cap, and the drainage detail spelled out, so you can compare it against any other estimates you're considering.
A 30% deposit covers materials and puts the job on the schedule.
The balance is invoiced when the work is finished. We will haul off the old wall and leave a clean job site before we leave.
